Who Is Eudora Welty?

Eudora Welty was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, and is considered one of the most famous American writers. Her whole life was dedicated to reading and writing, and through her passion, she managed to craft many fine works over the years. Although she never stuck to one genre and varied her style often, she is mostly recognized for her short stories, essays, and novels.

Eudora was never afraid of tackling controversial topics and made a point to discuss these issues through her work instead of ignoring them. She was recognized internationally when her novel, The Optimist’s Daughter, won a Pulitzer Prize in 1973. She was later made a Chevalier de la legion d’honneur by the French government, which is their highest order of merit!

Touring Eudora Welty’s House

Eudora Welty lived in her Jackson house from 1925 until her death in 2001. The property is one of the most beautiful literary houses in the country. The house itself is a National Historic Landmark, and the garden is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Touring the house provides a magical opportunity to travel back in time. House tours are offered throughout the day, so visitors can marvel at the original interior, exterior, furniture, decor, books, photographs, and other priceless artifacts. You can listen to stories and anecdotes from your guide! Everything is exactly how Eudora Welty placed it. When she gave her home to the state of Mississippi in 1986, she stipulated that she wanted it to remain the same in honor of her family and their love of literature.

The house is open every Tuesday, Friday, and second Saturday of the month. We recommend calling the office at (601) 353-7762 to make sure there are no special events or holidays happening when you visit.
