Concert Series

Here in the Deep South, many people know our state as the birthplace of Jazz or as the home of legendary musicians such as BB King, Elvis Presley, and Jimmie Rodgers. To honor these iconic figures, a concert series known as “We Are Mississippi” was organized.

  • South Celebration- The Band Perry performed on April 1, 2017, in Centennial Plaza in Gulfport. This Bicentennial Celebration in Gulfport, MS, lasted for 2 days!
  • North Celebration- In Oxford, MS, many nationally acclaimed artists provided entertainment at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts. It’s the perfect way to commemorate the storytelling capital of Mississippi!
  • Central Celebration- On December 9, 2017, downtown Jackson will celebrate the grand opening of the 2 Mississippi Museums and feature a concert on the front lawn!

Each of these musical performances highlights the fundamental sounds of the blues, classical, and rock ‘n’ roll genres.

Opening of the Two Mississippi Museums

The Central Celebration will focus on cultivating and preserving the most compelling and interesting lessons in our history. The Two Mississippi Museums, the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and the Museum of Mississippi History, will open and teach thousands of visitors through educational programs. The combined 200,000-square-foot complex beholds state-of-the-art amenities, electronic archives, showcase over 22,000 artifacts, and interactive exhibits. You don’t want to miss the ribbon cutting of these informative institutions!

Other Ways to Celebrate 200 Years of Southern Heritage

The goal of these Mississippi Bicentennial events is to further develop curriculum for Mississippi students, as well as, showcase arts expositions, traveling exhibits, and documentary films. In addition, the Mississippi Humanities Council has partnered with the Visit Mississippi organization to conduct the Bicentennial Year Grants Program. This innovative partnership will provide up to $10,000 to public programs that are honoring the state’s 200th year. The ultimate outcome is to instill a sense of pride in local organizations and empower them to continue revolutionizing our state’s ideals through community culture and creativity.
